Blackjack: the story of a card game that transcends the ages
So you think you’re down with blackjack? Hold on a minute. Behind the cards lies a centuries-long saga between strategy and legendary poker moves. We’re going to take you on a journey through history and show you the most stylish versions of this mythical game. Let’s play.
A gentle start... for an absolute boss of a game
Flashback: here we are in the seventeenth century, in powdered wigs and lit by candles. In France, twenty-one is already being played. Same goal as today: reach 21 but do not exceed it!
Meanwhile, in Spain, a more rigid version called ventiuna was gaining traction in the card world. But it was the United States that gave blackjack its name of today. To attract players, some establishments set up a special bonus where an ace of spades was accompanied by a black jack, a winning combo called “blackjack”. The bonus disappeared, but the name stuck. And the game itself? It became legendary.
Simple? Yes. Predictable? Never.
The idea of blackjack is simple: beat the dealer without going past 21. The ace is worth 1 or 11, the face cards are worth 10 and the other cards are worth their value. You get two cards, you choose either hit, stand, double down, or split.
Behind this simple mechanism of the game, blackjack forces you to react quickly, read the table and make the right decisions. Blackjack is a game of chance, but also of strategy, observation and calculation. And believe me, it activates the neurons.
Over time, several versions have emerged to spice up the experience:
- Blackjack Switch: two hands, card swaps allowed. Useful if you like to be in control.
- Double Exposure: the dealer plays their cards on the table, literally, since both cards are visible.
- Pontoon: British version, alternative rules, but still the same thrill.
And of course, at Casino1, you can try several variants of blackjack, but also play blackjack live with real croupiers from your sofa or space shuttle (we are almost ready for that).
From Monte-Carlo to Casino1: blackjack travels over time and cultures
From Monte-Carlo to Macao and Las Vegas, blackjack has crossed continents and centuries, strong, popular and thrilling.
In the 1930s, Nevada legalized gambling to save the local economy. Blackjack then became a major attraction in fabulous gambling halls and casino hotels.
At the end of the 20th century, gambling entered another dimension: calculation. MIT students, experts in probability, developed a card counting system and won considerable sums. This story inspired books and films, like 21, Casino and Ocean’s 11.
Today, blackjack is no longer limited to classic green baize. It's also at home, online, at Casino1, in an ultra-accessible mode.
