Roulette glossary

So you want to try roulette, but you feel like it's a math game? Spoiler: it’s not at all. This mythical casino game is ultra simple to grasp... as long as you know a few basics. And because at Casino1 we like to make your life easier, Chip has prepared a small glossary and a quick to read explanation. The green baize, a spinning ball, a little thrill: let’s roll.

Know the essentials before you bet

  • Roulette The essence of the game. A wheel, a ball, a betting mat. You bet on where the ball will land. Simple, effective.
  • Baize: This is where you place your bets. You will see a lot of numbers, red and black boxes, columns, sections... there’s no need to remember everything. You just to know where you want to bet.
  • Straight: You bet on a single number. A big risk, but also a big win (35 times your bet, baby).
  • Horse (or split): You bet on two adjacent numbers. You place your chip on the line between the two. Less risky than the straight, but still nice.
  • Square: A bet on four numbers that form a square on the baize. You place your chip in the center of this magic square.
  • Red/Black: You bet on the color of the pockets where the ball will land. 50/50 (or almost, thanks to zero).
  • Odd/evens: Another 50/50 bet: will the ball land on an even number... or an odd one?
  • Dozen: You divide the 36 numbers into three groups of 12. You bet on one of them. Practical if you want to cast a wide net.
  • Columns: Same principle as the dozen, but in a column. Choose the one you want and cross your fingers.
  • Zero (and double zero): The zero (and its cousin the 00 in American roulette) is the green space. It can mess everything up. It gives a small advantage to the house.

Terms that are somewhat more technical, but useful

  • Cave: The amount you choose to bet for your session. Set your budget before playing and do not exceed it.
  • RTP (Return to Player): This is the theoretical percentage that the game pays you back in the long run. The higher it is, the better it is for you.
  • Le Partage/En Prison: Bonus rules available in certain variants (often the French one). They allow you to recover part or all of your outside bet if the ball lands on zero. A nice little life buoy.
  • Croupier: The person (or the computer) who spins the wheel, manages the bets and announces the results. Online, they are often live on video. It's up to you to impress them 😉

3 little bonus tips from Chip

  1. European > American: the European version has a single zero. Mathematically, you have a slightly better chance of winning.
  2. Outside bet = safer: when you start, play on colors, evens/odds, or dozens. It's less risky, but still fun.
  3. A little, but not too much: set a budget, choose how you want to play (live or online), and enjoy it. Roulette is a vibe, not a marathon.
