Origins of Casino de Namur: a legendary place in Belgium

If you love casino games, architecture with character, and riverside views, then Casino de Namur is a must-see. Between its eventful history, stunning renovation, and lively atmosphere, this venue is more than just a casino, it’s a Belgian legend. And you’re about to find out why.

A casino with a view (and a story)

Before becoming the Circus Casino Resort Namur we know today, this iconic site was called the Kursaal. The name, of German origin, referred to an elegant leisure venue combining relaxation and entertainment. The first Kursaal, built in 1879, was already standing proudly by the Meuse River, but it wasn’t until 1914 that the now-famous building came to life.
On August 2, 1914, the brand-new venue, designed by architect Georges Hobé, was inaugurated. Just two days later, Belgium was invaded. A rough start, but despite wars, fires, and multiple reconstructions, the building stood the test of time.

From leisure venue to gaming temple

Between the two World Wars, the Kursaal became a hub for parties, shows, and social gatherings. Gradually, games of chance began to take center stage. By the eve of World War II, dice and cards had taken over as the venue’s main attractions.
The 1980s marked a turning point. A fire destroyed part of the southern building, leading to a complete reconstruction in 1986 in a more contemporary style. The new structure included a high-end hotel, Le Beauregard, and modern facilities designed to welcome a new generation of casino enthusiasts.

From Kursaal to Circus Casino Resort: a modern rebirth

2019 marked another milestone. A massive renovation project began, with the goal of turning Casino de Namur into Belgium’s first true gaming resort. The mission? To combine a casino, a four-star hotel, a restaurant, a spa, and event spaces into a single, vibrant entertainment complex.
In 2022, the Circus Casino Resort Namur officially reopened. The revamped complex included a new 6,000 m² wing, a Mercure hotel, and a brand-new restaurant. The main entrance was relocated, the interior redesigned, and the entire space reimagined. The result? Not just a casino, but a destination in its own right.
