Short poker glossary
Have you always thought that poker was cool, but a little complicated? The good news is that it's not rocket science. This exciting game combines strategy, tension and chance, especially online. But before you dive into a game, it's best to have some basic vocabulary. Here's a short glossary of the most common terms, so you don't get left behind on your first hand.
15 poker terms you should know
All-in
This is when you bet all your chips at once. No turning back: either you double up or you're out (or almost). The “go for broke” moment in poker.
Blind (big ans small)
Before the cards are even dealt, two players place mandatory bets: the small blind and the big blind. This starts the action and sets off the players.
Bluff
Making people believe you have an incredible hand when you have nothing or very little (or vice versa). It’s the art of psychology in poker. Whether this is done online or in person, when done well, it can really sting.
Buy-in
This is the entry fee paid to participate in a game or tournament. It can be minimal or super high stakes — it's up to you to decide what level you play at (and whether you’ve got the money and nerve).
Call
Matching another player's bet. You add the requested amount without raising. It's kind of the bare minimum needed to stay in the race.
Check
You don't bet anything, but you stay in play. It's like saying "I'm missing my turn, but I'm still at the table".
Flop
The first three community cards placed in the center of the table. They give you an idea of how your hand can evolve.
Fold
You end your game. You surrender the hand and lose the chips you already bet. Sometimes it's better to give up than to lose everything.
Pot
The pool of chips in the middle of the table. It grows with each bet and is what everyone wants to pocket.
Raise
You increase the bet. You show that you're confident in your hand (or that you're bluffing well). You put more chips in than the previous bet.
River
The fifth and final community card. This one can change everything. If you were hoping for a miracle, it'll be now or never.
Stack
The stack of chips you have in front of you. The higher it is, the more your opponents will be impressed or scared.
Tell
A "tic" or behavior that gives away your game. Live, it's a look or a gesture. Online, it's more your way of betting.
Tilt
When you lose your temper after a bad hand or a bad beat. The result? You play badly, too fast, too hard. This is to be avoided at all costs.
Turn
The fourth community card placed after the flop. It can complete your hand or spell the end for your game. Suspense.
Poker; a game that’s not as complicated as you think
You don't have to read a 200-page manual or be a math genius to play poker. Poker is all about flair, a little strategy, holding your composure... and having a lot of fun.
