Bells, reels and style: the crazy story of the first slot machines

Before LED screens, six-figure jackpots and 3D animations, there was a metal handle, three reels and a loud, satisfying click.
Today, we’re going back in time to meet the very first slot machine. Spoiler: players loved them.

One bell, three reels... and a stroke of genius

Flashback to 1890s San Francisco. Californian mechanic Charles Fey tinkers in his garage to create a machine featuring 3 reels, 5 symbols (diamond, spade, heart, horseshoe and bell), a single winning line and a 50-cent jackpot. The result: Liberty Bell, the very first automatic payout slot machine.

So how did it work? Simple, raw and brilliant: insert a coin, pull the lever, hold your breath. No digital sound, no epic cinematics... but the thrill was there all right.

The machine quickly became a local phenomenon, landing in bars, barbershops, grocery stores... and, of course, casinos. It had that feeling that anything could happen, the absolute essence of slot machines.

When the first slot machines arrived at the casino

Back then, casinos weren't as technologically advanced as they are today. But owners immediately saw the potential of the machines: accessible, fun, immediate. No need for bluffing, counting or calculating. It's just you against the odds.

Placed at casino entry points, the machines quickly became one of the players' favorite games of chance. Their sound became the classic casino soundtrack.

Anecdotes, tips and unlikely DIY projects

Before gambling was legalized, some machine owners found a way around this. Some machines dispensed chewing gum, drinks or cigars instead of coins. The peppermint jackpot was delicious...

A little on the design... it certainly wasn’t plastic. It was cast iron, chrome, and hand-painted dials. These machines were real works of art, played manually while standing up, in an atmosphere that was as social as it was fun.

Yesterday V today: same thrills, new sensations

Today's slot machines have come a long way. They're digital, immersive, with many special features and unexpected extra minigames. But deep down, the nature remains the same: you bet, you spin the reels, watch them turn, and hope for the best.

At Casino1, we've kept this essence intact. Our dice slots are the perfect blend of retro fun and digital power. Do you like a vintage vibe? We have it. Or do you prefer fast, flashy action? We have it.

Chance remains the master, but everything is made to ensure the game is a pleasure to play.

Wheeling into the past... version 2.0

Why have slot machines been a hit for over a century? Because they tap into something that's universal to us all: the joy of taking a chance, but without any headaches. Purely for the pleasure of finding out what fate has in store for us.

Today, you don't need metal parts or a squeaky lever. And there’s no chance you’ll be winning chewing-gum. At Casino1, you're just one click away from gaming, enjoying top-level design, and rediscovering the same thrill that Charles Fey launched 130 years ago. So, get those reels spinning!
